Accommodation overview: Very attractive cottage, maintained to a high standard with a lovely enclosed garden. Fakenham is one of Norfolk's traditional country towns, which has a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants and three supermarkets. It has hosted a weekly market since 1250, and although the goods provided for sale may have changed somewhat, together with the auction it still provides a very popular day out for bargain hunters! The town also has a cinema and a ten-pin bowling alley as well as a National Hunt racecourse. Fakenham is just ten miles from the sandy beach at Holkham, two miles from Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, as featured in the BBC Springwatch nature programme, and two miles from The Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe.
The Cottage is a beautifully presented holiday cottage, which retains much of its original character, including pamment floors and original fireplaces. It is an ideal location for a holiday at any time of the year and the area is famed for ornithology and has many excellent walks. It has considerable historic charm with many thatched cottages and a handsome church, whose tower top is now accessible to visitors. There is a prominent red and white striped lighthouse, and the beach is loved by all age groups. There are some lovely coastal and rural walks in the area and many attractions to visit, including the Broads and the Royal Horticultural Society garden at East Ruston. Heather Cottage is an attractively presented, pleasant, modern cottage. It is well maintained and offers a warm welcome at any time of the year. A shortcut beyond the pub, across a field and down a lane you will come to a new car park and picnic area and a wide sandy bay, all of this only about a ten minute walk from the cottage. The village has the remains of an early 12th century Benedictine priory, where classical concerts are held throughout the summer and the whole area is steeped in history. The Georgian town of Holt is five miles away with the harbour town of Wells four miles away. Also nearby is the picturesque village of Blakeney, where narrow streets slope down to the tidal creek, and which offers sailing and beautiful coastal and marshland walks. The well-stocked village shop is a legendary village institution, as are the excellent butcher, gift shop and pub with its own micro-brewery.
