Hunstanton (4 miles) is an attractive Victorian seaside town with a friendly atmosphere. It offers those who prefer a more relaxed seaside holiday, bowls, concerts, and the pretty Esplanade Gardens overlooking the sea; or for the more active, there is a fun fair, Sea Life Centre and Oasis sports centre with both indoor and outdoor swimming-pools. The Princess Theatre has Summer season shows, celebrity concerts, country music specials and a Christmas pantomime. ’Sunny Hunny’, as it is affectionately known by locals is famous for its striped cliffs, golden sands and clear water. The coastal village of Brancaster (5 miles) offers superb sailing, with boat trips to the nature reserve on Scolt Head Island available from the staithe.
King’s Lynn (17 miles) was one of England’s premier ports as far back as the 12th century, and this sense of maritime history is still visible today. Medieval merchants’ houses stand next to the river between cobbled lanes, and the renowned Custom House provides a landmark for the fishing fleet, as it has done for centuries. Shop ½ mile.

Alternatively the fine city of Norwich is only 20 miles away with its cathedrals, theatres, museums, and array of shops and cafes. Further afield, but definitely worth a visit are Dinosaur Adventure Park, Africa Alive, Ickworth House, Park and Gardens (NT) and Wroxham Barns with its shops, children’s fairground and petting farm. For active groups there is karting, the ‘Go Ape’ aerial assault courses, clay pigeon shooting and paintballing locally. For something more relaxing, pamper days can be booked at the Aqua Sana Spa in Elveden Forest or local beauty therapists will make home calls. Interesting places include Norwich with its cathedral and castle museum, and Bury St Edmunds - one of the prettiest Georgian towns in Suffolk. Wyken Vineyards has a regular Saturday farmers’ market as well as walks and tours. Another obvious choice for a day out is to take a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads, stopping off to enjoy a quiet drink or leisurely meal at one of the many quaint pubs in the area. Shops 2 miles.

Daily boat hire is available at Wroxham, the ‘capital’ of the Broads, where there is also a fine choice of waterside cafes and inns in which to pause and enjoy some light refreshment.
Theatre, shops, inns and further cafes are to be found at the medieval town of Kings Lynn, 16 miles away, and the beautiful city of Norwich (18 miles) additionally has a castle and museum. Also worth a visit is Colman’s Mustard Museum where many varieties that are not generally available are sold here while the countless yellow fields which surround Norwich are tell-tale signs that the mustard trade is still thriving today.
The market towns of Swaffham (5 minutes), East Dereham (15 minutes) and Fakenham (30 minutes) are close by, whilst Thetford Forest Park (15 miles) covers several thousand acres with marked forest walks, wildlife hides and cycle trails. Nearby places of interest include Oxburgh Hall, the Royal Sandringham Estate, and Castle Acre Priory and castle ruins. Fly fishing and coarse fishing at Narborough trout and coarse fishing lakes, 10 miles, with golf, walking and cycling locally. Shop, pub, restaurant 3/4 mile.

The coastal road passes through many pretty rural villages, with popular tea rooms serving wonderful local food.
For those who enjoy a visit to the beach whilst on holiday, the seaside resorts of Hunstanton and Heacham boast Blue Flag award beaches and array of traditional seaside activities and attractions for all ages. Hunstanton (22 miles) has a pier with lively seasonal entertainment, Sea Life Centre and cliff-top golf course. Heacham (20 miles) is home to Norfolk Lavender and visitors may participate in guided tours of the expanse of lavender fields to observe the harvesting. Sandringham Estate - the Queens country residence, with its Jacobean-style house, museum, superb gardens and park are open to the public when the Royal Family is not in residence. To the south lies Ely Cathedral, ‘Ship of the Fens’, standing proudly in the small city of Ely. Ely has an excellent Saturday market and a good variety of gift shops, as well as a pretty water front and boat hire. The historic city of Cambridge is easily accessible for the day and well worth a visit. One of the nicest ways to explore the city is by punt, which meanders through the city and passes many of the stunning university grounds. There are also many shops, pubs, restaurants and theatres. Norwich, famous for its cathedral is also within easy reach, where a visit to the stunning cathedral is not to be missed, as is the famous mustard shop, with many new and old varieties can be purchased.
