Accommodation overview: Renovated and restored to a very high standard, this circa 1500s half-timbered house is located opposite the pub on the green in a quiet village near the historic Canterbury. Nearby are many public gardens, including Goodnestone Park - considered to be one of the best gardens in the south-east, and Barnsole Vineyard where wines have acheived ‘quality status’. There are numerous National Trust properties in the area including, Emmetts Garden, Ightham Mote, Scotney Castle Garden and Estate, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Smallhythe Place and Stoneacre. The White Cliffs of Dover, also National Trust, are internationally famous and home to five miles of coast and countryside. Most of the chalk downland along the clifftops are a Sight of Special Scientific Interest, an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coast with interesting flora and fauna. These properties can all be booked together to accommodate larger groups, to sleep a maximum of 32 guests in total.
Barnham Court Farm is located just 4 miles from the nearest quiet beach at Climping, whilst the unspoilt beach at West Wittering is only about 20 minutes’ drive away. Chichester is only 6 miles away, with its beautiful ornate cathedral and abundance of pedestrianised cobbled lanes with various shops, tearooms, pubs and restaurants. Other amenities include a leisure centre with indoor pool, a cinema complex, the popular Festival Theatre which has year-round productions, and famous Goodwood Races for horse or motor racing; Fontwell racecourse is also only about 3 miles away.
Other places of interest include The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, and historic Arundel with castle cathedral, various book and art shops, and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust – ideal for bird-watchers. Slightly further afield is Brighton, perfect for a family day out, boasting the decadent Royal Pavilion, art galleries, theatres and Sea Life Museum, plus seaside entertainment along the promenade and pier.

Scalby Lodge sits in an idyllic location on the edge of the elegant seaside town of Scarborough, with direct access to the Cleveland Way and affording stunning views towards the 12th-century castle ruins and across the coastline towards Bempton Cliffs RSPB Bird Sanctuary. Bird watchers should note that there is direct access to Scalby Pond boasting a private hide which guests are welcome to use. Scarborough is known as the first seaside resort and has been welcoming guests for more than 300 years. It boasts two beautiful beaches, with the North Bay being popular with surfers and the South Bay perfect for a fun-filled family day at the seaside. The town centre is home to an eclectic mix of shops, a wide choice of restaurants and its very own theatre where plays by the famous Alan Ayckbourn can be enjoyed. A stroll along the esplanade, featured in the TV series The Royal and Heartbeat, is a delight with far reaching views towards the castle and across the bays. Marshwood Manor offers excellent accommodation and facilities in a tranquil rural setting, surrounded by Dorset’s loveliest countryside, and only 5 miles from the unspoilt beaches and golden sandstone cliffs of the coastline. The estate’s 10 acres of lawn, garden, pasture and woodland offer plenty of room for adults to stroll and children to play.
The properties have been carefully formed from a fine original range of buildings next to the manor house.and may be booked together to accommodate larger groups holidaying together (property refs DEY, DFA, DEX, DUS, DUT, DWS) Previously filmed for BBC television, all retain character and charm, whilst offering comfortable holiday accommodation fitted to a high standard throughout. Each has its own garden with furniture, and all enjoy shared use of the extensive gardens and grounds – as well as a range of facilities, including use of the owners’ small outdoor heated swimming pool (1st May - 30th Sept) set in a walled garden. There is a large games barn with pool table and table tennis, and a children’s play area with swings and slide. Approached along a private drive and set well back from the road, the cottages are perfectly positioned for enjoying this delightful corner of Dorset.
There are a variety of beautiful beaches, both sand and pebble, within a five to ten mile radius, including those at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eype, West Bay and Burton Bradstock. Fossil-rich cliffs define this dramatic stretch of coastline, which encompasses the 2,000-acre National Trust estate of Golden Cap. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.
A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school, and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay. Guests can enjoy art classes with a trained instructor in our own studio (subject to an additional charge, availability and prior booking). There are also riding stables in the area.
