The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Accommodation overview: An 18th century traditional detached cottage, with sea glimpses from the garden, in the middle of the rural hamlet of Treligga. This cosy cottage retains many of its early features including some of the original slate flagstones on the floor and with white painted natural stone and cob walls.

Approached from a peaceful country lane, a gated path leads to the enclosed garden at the rear, where 3 granite steps lead up to a sheltered patio with sea views on the horizon over the Cornish hedge. Entered through a small porch with an inner door opening into a narrow L shaped kitchen with fitted units and a rustic dining area set beneath a wood panelled sloping ceiling.

A low doorway leads into the oldest part of the cottage and a small sitting room with a low board and beam ceiling, an oil fired stove which provides heating and hot water, and a sofa bed as a sleeping alternative.

Wooden stairs wind up in one corner of the room to a gallery bedroom with a 5ft bed, a cross beamed ceiling and slightly sloping natural floorboards. Beyond the bedroom is a bathroom W.C. with hand basin and shower over the bath, and views over the hamlet and surrounding countryside towards the sea. There is off road parking for one small car directly outside the front of the cottage.

The nearest shop and pub are at Delabole, about 2 miles away by road, but can also be reached by footpath across the fields. The attractive fishing village at Port Isaac and the sandy beaches of the Camel Estuary are within a 15 minute drive, and for a wider selection of amenities, the towns of Camelford and Wadebridge are about 20 minutes by car. Trebarwith Strand beach, 1.5 miles away on foot, and the dramatic North Coast cliff path and Tregardock beach can be reached via a walk across the fields.

Occupying a superb position with wonderful rural views, yet within a mile or so of Cheltenham’s elegant town centre, these delightful holiday cottages have been created from a range of 19th-century barns and are furnished and equipped to high standards. All cottages enjoy a good choice of shared facilities including a covered heated swimming pool, an all-weather tennis court and a croquet lawn. The cottages are well equipped, with an automatic washing machine, microwave oven and dishwasher, and each cottage has its own sitting out area with patio and furniture.
All the fascinating corners of the beautiful Regency spa town of Cheltenham are immediately to hand: there is an art gallery, a museum, tempting boutiques, antique shops, plentiful restaurants and inns. Only a short walk away is Cheltenham’s racecourse, famous as the home of National Hunt Racing, which stages the Cheltenham Festival in March, as well as several other top quality race meetings between October and the end of April. The Pittville Pump Room, a magnificent Grade I listed building opened in 1830, has a museum on its top floor. In the ballroom it is possible to taste spa water from the original pump. Historic illustrations, photographs and small displays tell the story of Cheltenham from its beginnings in Anglo-Saxon times. The building is surrounded by attractive parkland with a lake and children’s playground, public tennis courts and golf course. Number 4 Clarence Road, built in 1832 by James Creed, is the house in which Gustav Holst was born on 21 September 1874, and where he spent the first seven years of his childhood. The Holst Birthplace Museum is a memorial to the composer and a rare treat for lovers of music. On the summit of nearby Leckhampton Hill above the Devil’s Chimney, a teetering rock column, is the site of an Iron Age fort; keen walkers can follow the Cotswold Way.
Hunting Butts Cottages provide a perfect base to explore the beautiful countryside and villages of the Cotswolds as well as the attractions of the Heart of England. The Cotswolds cast their spell on artists, naturalists, walkers and everyone with a love for rural peace and tranquillity: Broadway – the ‘Venice’ of the Cotswolds; delightful Chipping Campden; Blockley, described as the most beautiful village in England, and Stow-on-the-Wold boasting England’s oldest pub, are all within half an hour’s drive.
