Set in Clappersgate within a small complex, just off the road between Ambleside and Skelwith Bridge, at the entrance to the Langdale Valley, Halfway House is in a super position for exploring, with an abundance of walks and cycle paths from the door. The gardens are particularly tranquil and we are sure that every opportunity will be taken to holiday outdoors. With parts of the house dating back to the early 17th Century, the former toll house proudly displays a wealth of original features, too numerous to mention, including a tremendous stone open fireplace which is of particular interest, and is only used as a feature.

The area is popular with canoeists and fishermen and being close to Grizedale Forest, the location is ideal for walkers and cyclists too. The cottage is neatly presented with 21st century styling and enjoys a delightful decked seating area giving way to lovely views of the steam railway passing by. The Swan Hotel, on the banks of the River Leven, offers great food throughout the day and is just 2 minutes stroll from the cottage. Please note that, due to the nearby railway line, we consider Steam Train Cottage suitable for only babes in arms.

The Elizabethan cobbled streets of Hawkshead, lined with whitewashed cottages and courtyards is mainly pedestrianised and so offers a pleasant amble around the church and the old Grammar school where Wordsworth carved his name on a desk. Just 3 miles over the hill from Hawkshead is Satterthwaite set amidst Grizedale Forest, with its excellent visitors centre, offering pre-bookable activities including Go Ape but also offering disabled access through many of their forest pathways.

Both Coniston, Ulverston and Broughton are within easy reach enabling visitors to explore the fields and fells that are visible from the door of Langholme Mill, enticing visitors to explore the great outdoors. Langholme Mill Cottage is rather special as it has almost an acre of beautiful woodland gardens. Designed around the mill race, the gardens feature interesting displays, ornamental bridges and features slate paths, as well as well established rhododendrons, hostas and aces providing a mass of vibrant colour. The owners open their garden (by prearranged appointment only) as part of the National Gardens Scheme throughout the summer in aid of nursing, caring and gardening charities.
