It may sound like a large furry mountain animal, but Yan Yak is actually Cumbrian dialect for One Oak. It has and interesting history, originally part of the very first Jennings Brewery and dates back to the turn of the 19th Century. in 1875 the brewery relocated to Cockermouth and continues brewing real ale to this day - daily tours of the brewery are available. Buttermere, Loweswater and Crummock are nearby, a peaceful corner of the English Lakes with unspoilt scenery. Accommodation overview: Burblet Cottage is a delightful stonebuilt property on the fringes of the market town of Kirkby Stephen and is an ideal location for sightseeing throughout Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. The garden and orchards are awash with colour in the height of the season and give way to stunning views of the Howgills. This is also a haven to wildlife, regular visitors to the grounds include red squirrels, a heron, woodpeckers and owls. The accommodation is very comfortable with carefully chosen accessories depicting rural life proudly on show, displayed on the exposed stone wall and dotted around the cottage. A welcome Pack and even a pair of binoculars are provided by the thoughtful owners offering you that much needed cuppa upon arrival and a closer view of your potential visitors. Walking, fishing, cycling, golf and birdwatching are all available locally. Accommodation overview: A mere mile from the newly developed and renowned Grizedale Forest Visitors Centre, Satterthwaite is an ideal location for those energetic guests who enjoying walking, cycling and generally the great outdoors. Go out of the front door and take 10 paces and your on one of Grizedales major cycling/walking routes, with the benefit of being able to pop into the new cafe at the Visitors Centre which serves fantastic food, beer, wine and soft drinks for the kids. You can experience Go Ape and for the little ones, there is a fantastic activity area with climbing frames etc. The village is small, yet friendly and you are sure to get a warm welcome at the local watering hole, which is particularly cosy in the winter with its big open fire. Within 4/5 miles you have the nearby villages of Hawkshead (perhaps visit via a great walk through the forest) and Coniston which are also fine examples of Lakeland villages, both with a good deal of attractions for all the family, from Beatrix Potters home to the Ruskin Museum . Winnowing Barn, a former bank barn, sits at the edge of the village, in a small quiet courtyard, and is arranged over three floors. The new owners have refurbished the property to a high standard and have ensured that modern fittings (including the addition of wireless broadband) combine well with the traditional features creating a warm, homely feel throughout. Fine views can be enjoyed from the lounge and front bedrooms, and the enclosed rear patio is sure to be put to good use on many occasions.
