The many fells surrounding the valley include Scafell Pike and Haystacks and 2 beautiful lakes, Derwentwater and Buttermere are each within a few minutes drive. Rosthwaite is 1 1/2 miles, with a pub and village store and a wealth of amenities are available in Keswick, 8 miles away. There is a regular bus service between Seatoller and Keswick.

The village has a pub, restaurant, shop and visitor centre at Nenthead mines. Alston is the highest market town in England, with steep cobbled streets and an interesting variety of shops and galleries. This is a panoramic landscape of fells, moors, ravines, valleys, mountains,rivers and waterfalls ( the highest waterfall in England is High Force approximately 10 miles away). Crisscrossed with bridleways, ancient tracks, Englands highest footpath, the Pennine Way and the C2C cycle route, the area is ideal for walking, cycling, pot holing and pony trekking.
