The studio cottages are a mirror image of each other with Gwel an Lagen being the property on the right, to greet you on arrival. The cottage is situated 30 yards from the main house and although you are totally independent, it can be booked as part of Colan Barton if desired.
Gwel an Lagen has views through a small copse, from its open patio area to Colan Church. Dating from 1250 the church has always been part of Colan Bartons landscape. Entrance into Gwel an Lagen is via a stable door into the kitchen / dining room with slate flooring and bespoke kitchen. Three steps down lead to the spacious vaulted living - sleeping area. A large comfortable sofa and a log burner on a raised hearth add a welcome homely and romantic touch. Relax by watching TV with Freeview, play DVD's or listen to music on the I-Pod docking station with CD player and radio. This unique and fascinating cottage, steeped in local history, has been lovingly restored to provide a wonderful holiday retreat. Formerly a working Smithy many of the original features remain. The huge open plan living area with original oak beams and high vaulted ceiling is complemented by contemporary styling. Comfy sofas surround the fireplace with a log burning stove inviting cosy evenings, and a spacious dining area is ideal for leisurely breakfasts. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you could need and more. A wide wooden staircase rises to the landing and on to the Minstrels Gallery where a half loft, originally used to store the iron, has been transformed into a unique double bedroom, open to the high vaulted ceiling and with a balustrade overlooking the living room below. A second compact double bedroom and a single bedroom with views over the town are found off the landing, together with an attractive bathroom. The Smithy provides guests with an opportunity to step back in time and experience the atmosphere of this genuine forge where Mr Bill Prideaux, working up to the age of 89, claimed to be the oldest blacksmith in the country. Today's visitors of course will be able to relax and enjoy their stay with excellent modern facilities and be ideally located right in the heart of Lynton with a choice of shops, restaurants and village inns nearby.
