The French doors provide access to the beautiful surroundings on warm summer evenings. Providing bright, spacious accommodation, this detached house with unspoilt views over open countryside, is well equipped with excellent facilities and comes with 1 acre of garden. Accessed by a private road and set in the heart of the owner’s 3000-acre arable farm, a stay here will provide the opportunity to enjoy the rural tranquillity of farm life including farm and river walks, bird watching and cycling. It also offers the convenience of being just a short drive from the historic city of Cambridge (there are also cycle routes to Cambridge from the farm) and cathedral city of Ely.
The city of Cambridge is 10 miles away, famous for its colleges, museums, botanic gardens and art galleries, where visitors can also try their hand at punting on the river Cam or enjoy a wealth of restaurants, pubs and theatres. Ely is 6 miles in the other direction with its 12th-century cathedral and range of interesting shops and restaurants. National Trust properties can be found at Wicken Fen
(5 miles), an ideal place to explore fen landscapes and Anglesey Abbey and gardens. A day at the races in Newmarket (14 miles) is a possibility, or pay a visit to the National Horse Racing Museum in the town. An added bonus for steam enthusiasts staying at Chittering Farm is the Stretham Old Engine which is located on the edge of the farm; erected in 1831 this is one of the earliest examples of a land drainage steam engine. The traditional seaside towns of Heacham and Hunstanton offer an array of activities for all ages. Many places of historical interest and stately homes are within surrounding area. Along the coast there are many delightful fishing villages including nearby Brancaster Staithe and Wells-next-the-Sea and, further on, popular Sheringham and Cromer (renowned for their fresh crabs and shellfish). Houghton Hall (7 miles), built in the 1720s, is one of England’s grandest surviving Palladian houses with an impressive model soldier collection. Many people come to this part of Norfolk simply for its connection with the Royal Family. Sandringham House, bought by Queen Victoria for her son Edward, has become famous as the Christmas residence of the Royals. Ashwood Manor has been renovated and offers comfortable, well furnished rooms, ideal for large parties. There is a spacious sitting room with lovely views over the lake and countryside, separate dining room, and attractive kitchen leading to a conservatory, as well as five bedrooms, one with a king-size four-poster. Ashwood Wing offers smaller but equally comfortable holiday accommodation for a group with fewer people. Guests at both properties have their own enclosed garden and access to the owners’ 7 acres of paddocks; the lake is close to the house but is fenced for safety. Fly-fishing and coarse fishing is available all year round at Narborough trout and coarse lakes ½-mile away. Lake at house available for fun fishing.
The local area offers wonderful woodland/river walks, and the superb gardens and park at Sandringham can be visited when the Royal Family is away. Good places to visit include Castle Rising and Castle Acre. The coast is only 15 miles and is a haven for bird-watchers, with the nearest RSPB reserve at Snettisham, which also has a beautiful church and Park Farm. The long sweep of sandy beach runs from here to Hunstanton and beyond, from where the Norfolk coast path begins. Medieval Kings Lynn, with its handsome waterfront, shops, inns and restaurants is just 8 miles. Swaffham market town, 6 miles. Shop ¾ mile.
