The original manor house was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087. The accommodation ranges from the Old Hall sleeping up to 11 in period splendour, with its own imposing front lawns and side garden, through to the cosy Crow’s Nest for 2 persons, nestling in the courtyard with a patio overlooking the orchard. Yard End House is an attractive barn conversion offering spacious accommodation for up to 12, including a double bedroom on the ground floor and a private sauna, with the remaining cottages converted from the original stables. All guests can enjoy the indoor heated swimming pool plus a shared games room with pool table, darts and table tennis. Within the grounds is a playing field, orchards, a lake and small woodland walks to enjoy.
Killerby Old Hall is situated between the coastal resorts of Scarborough and Filey on part of Britain’s Heritage Coast. Central, with the North Yorkshire Moors of ‘Heartbeat Country’ to the North and the Yorkshire Wolds to the West, which are both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Killerby is within easy range of many popular locations. These include Whitby, quaint Robin Hoods Bay, a former smugglers haunt, Castle Howard, the market towns of Helmsley and Pickering, the starting point for the North York Moors railway, plus the famous twin bays and castle of Scarborough. For the more adventurous Flamingo Land, the popular theme park can be visited or the Langdale forest experience, 4x4 and off road driving, is within a 30-minute drive. Cayton is just a 500 yard stroll away with its two pubs, post office and shops; full amenities in Scarborough are 4½ miles, making Killerby a perfect location to enjoy the rural life without being too remote. Numerous beaches nearby include Hunmanby Gap (2 miles), Filey and Reighton. Scarborough (9 miles) boasts two beautiful sandy beaches, several inns and theatre with plays by Alan Ayckborn. Inland are the NY Moors, an AONB, with paths to many quaint little villages. Also a ‘must’ are Whitby (23 miles), the Esk Valley Railway, Staithe’s Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. The ancient town of Richmond, at the gateway to Swaledale, has an unfinished 11th-century castle and an excellent market place. The town is a hive of activity, offering a theatre, shops, inns, restaurants and a host of other town amenities. A riverside footpath leads gently to Easby Abbey, with some parts still remaining. Other historic and religious sites in the area include Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Coverham Abbey. Within driving distance are Scotch Corner and Catterick (once the home to a Roman camp), and Kiplin Hall is well worth a visit. Ripon is home to Fountains Abbey, Britain’s largest and most beautiful monastic ruin which has the added bonus of being the focal point of Studley Royal, an 18th-century landscaped garden complete with lake, temples, water garden and deer park. The scenic splendour of the Dales is easily accessible, providing good walking, cycling and riding terrain.
A little further afield are the bustling Tyne towns of Newcastle and Durham, both excellent for their great shops, markets, restaurants and bars. Durham is also famous for its majestic 12th-century cathedral, medieval castle and university – the third oldest in England. Below the castle and cathedral are the wooded banks of the River Wear, where riverside walks can be enjoyed, passing a succession of elegant bridges with fine vantage points over the town. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park is close by with its famous steam railway, which offers a relaxing ride through the stunning moorland and forest. A day out can be enjoyed at Castle Howard, 15 miles, set in an elevated position against the Howardian Hills and the location for the filming of Brideshead Revisited.
