Accommodation overview: This magnificent south-facing Grade II* listed home dates back to the early 17th century and is full of fabulous original features including a magnificent oak-panelled dining room and hand-carved 17th-century fireplace. Most recently home to an independent girls school, this the principal wing housed the headmistress’ study and staffrooms. It sits in nearly 2 acres of beautiful gardens bordering a 9-hole golf course, gym, tennis courts and additional communal gardens and woodland walks. A little path through the garden leads to Hunmanby, a thriving village with several pubs, restaurants, a bakery, deli and supermarket. The house itself is an extraordinary trip back in time – the grand hallway arches lead to a stunning 30ft drawing room with an ornate wood-burning hearth and a baby grand piano, perfect for celebrating that special family occasion. All reception rooms, including the grand formal dining room and the family sitting room look out over the south-facing gardens. The bedrooms have further surprises with their dramatic ceiling murals and fabulous sea views and the master suite with its separate dressing room and unexpected snug and roof terrace designed by an 18th-century sea captain to represent a ship’s stern will take one’s breath away. Cricket or croquet can be enjoyed on the lawn as well as golf, tennis or freshwater fishing at the village lake (for a small fee). Numerous beaches nearby include Hunmanby Gap (2 miles), Filey and Reighton. Scarborough (9 miles) boasts two beautiful sandy beaches, several inns and theatre with plays by Alan Ayckborn. Inland are the NY Moors, an AONB, with paths to many quaint little villages. Also a ‘must’ are Whitby (23 miles), the Esk Valley Railway, Staithe’s Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. Ash Cottage is a delightful 200 year old fishermans cottage which has recently been restored. The lounge, completely renovated in 2010 now has exposed stonework and a cosy wood burning stove, and offers stunning sea views from the dining table. The first floor bedroom is spacious and with views of the sea, and a guest area on the second floor has a day bed and an additional TV/DVD (but with a steep staircase and no stairgate- young children please be careful!) The twin room is accessed via the guest area. Bench seating to the rear overlooking the sea is perfect to enjoy at anytime of day and the sandy beach is a mere 5 minute walk away, as are the pubs serving food, shops, cafes and Staithes Heritage Centre and Captain Cook Museum where you may learn about the life and voyages of this famous seaman who spent some of his childhood as an apprentice in Staithes.
