Greta Bridge is a landmark hamlet, south of the A66 trans-Peninne road and only 4 miles south-east of the market town of Barnard Castle. Built on the site of a Roman settlement, and beside the pretty River Greta, is the neighbouring Morritt Arms Hotel (a 17th-century coaching inn, where Charles Dickens stayed whilst researching for his novel Nicholas Nickleby), which serves delicious food.
There is much to do and see in the surrounding area with Darlington a mere 18 miles distant. Within an hour’s drive there are many racecourses including Sedgefield, Catterick, Wetherby, York and Newcastle to name but a few. Scotch Corner is 9 miles, and Teeside 30 miles. Wonderful walks from the cottage. Shop 3½ miles, pub/restaurant 50 yards.

It served as a hunting lodge and lookout tower in what was once within the deer park of nearby Raby Castle. The holiday accommodation is set over three floors, has charm and character, and is sympathetically furnished to reflect its history. The tower sits in attractive grounds, on a mound above a stream, in secluded surroundings. Whilst able to accommodate up to a maximum of eight people if all bedrooms are shared, the three-storey layout gives it a cosiness that lends itself to smaller parties as well.
The tower is located on the edge of the Pennines in Teesdale, north of the main Yorkshire Dales. The impressive Raby Castle is a few minutes’ drive away. To the west there are excellent walks in Upper Teesdale, an area of wild moorland, lonely farmsteads and attractive villages, with the added attraction of High Force, England’s largest single drop waterfall. The historic market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its ruined castle and collection of European fine and decorative arts housed in the impressive Bowes Museum. Richmond and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are just to the south. Away from rural unspoilt Teesdale, 30 minutes’ drive to the north is Durham city with its famous cathedral and castle. A few miles on lies Beamish Open Air Museum. Also within reach are Hadrian’s Wall and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Day trips to York or the Lake District (1 hour 15 minutes) are also an option. Shop 2 miles.
