Fowlsheugh, the RSPB reserve at Crawton is well worth a visit; the cliffs at Fowlsheugh are packed with 130,000 seabirds and where grey seals and minke whales are occasionally spotted. The wild life reserve at Montrose Basin is just 20 miles south and has a visitor centre with viewing gallery to provide panoramic views for a variety of birds. During the summer months you can take a boat trip from Stonehaven, past Dunnotter Castle admiring the sea cliffs and bird colonies, if you are really lucky you might even spot a dolphin. Accommodation overview: Cowrie Cottage is a pretty, traditional stone fishermans cottage situated just a few steps from beaches of Portknockie. The cottage takes its name from the cowrie shell, which is avidly searched for and can be found on the nearby shoreline. Cowries have been valued for centuries in many parts of the world. In China and Africa they were used as currency (the Chinese character for money is a cowrie shaped shell) and these marine gastropods are still sought by collectors today. There is a collection of these tiny, ribbed shells left in the cottage and visitors are welcome to add to the collection (or take their finds home as a unique memento!). The caring owners have upgraded and refurbished this lovely cottage over the years and it now provides a high standard of accommodation, whilst retaining many attractive original features, including stripped pine doors.
