Accommodation overview: This large five bedroomed 17th-century character house is set in the heart of the prestigious rural village of Rolleston-on-Dove – first documented in King Edmund’s Charter of 942AD. Overlooking the church and village green, the extended cottage has privacy assured from the very large enclosed landscaped gardens allowing areas for complete relaxation. The Croft is a detached holiday property and is close to an attractive and popular village pub which serves excellent food and wine. Furnished to a very high standard throughout, The Croft has its own cinema room which allows guests the chance to enjoy a movie on a large screen. The large family kitchen is equipped with modern fittings and the large dining room area is fantastic to enjoy a meal together at the end of a busy day. There is a conservatory and separate study room with computer access for those that like to keep in touch whilst away or for researching the many local attractions in the area. There are five bedrooms in total – two on the first floor share a family shower room with toilet whilst a third and fourth have a Jack and Jill shower room with toilet. The fifth bedroom is on the ground floor along with a separate bathroom and toilet. The North Staffordshire Railway gives access to Burton-on-Trent and nearby facilities include Alton Towers, Drayton Manor Park, Snibson Discovery Park, Conkers, Bass Museum, Carsington Reservoir, Ashbourne and several National Trust properties. The famous Tutbury Crystal and Tutbury Castle are also nearby and for keen cyclists, the Tissington Trail with its 13-mile route is a must. Donnington Park is 25 minutes away, which is home to the World Superbike Championship and (from 2010) to the British Formula One Grand Prix. Craythorne Golf Club is ½ mile. Nestling in 14 acres of grounds on an upland called Priest’s Hill with excellent walking available from the doorstep, the properties have the use of an extensive range of leisure facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium and treatment rooms. Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.
It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Derbyshire’s bustling market towns, villages, hills, dales and rivers offer majestic scenery, and a rich variety of customs. Boasting a varied and beautiful landscape, they offer a blend of heritage, history and family attractions. The original group of properties five of which we offer here are converted from 19th century farm buildings. Very comfortably furnished they are set around a courtyard whilst Dove and Edale Cottages have been built in a complimentary style and offer luxurious accommodation. Visitors enjoy free membership of the leisure facilities which include an indoor heated swimming pool sauna table tennis and pool table. Brackendale Spa offering luxurious treatments (extra charge). Outside are patio areas and plenty of space for relaxation; a play area for children is set in a wooded part of the grounds and there are peaceful spots for picnics and barbecues. On site is the Brackendale Restaurant which is fully licensed and serves freshly prepared home cooked food to eat in or take away. There are several country inns offering real ales and good food within 2 miles.
Within easy walking distance is the beautiful Carsington Water a superb windsurfing and sailing centre. Here you can arrange to launch your own board or canoe or hire kayaks windsurfers Canadian canoes (great for families) sailing dinghies and cycles. Expert tuition is available and throughout the summer there are special fun days for children. Fly fishing for brown trout is popular on this well stocked lake. Dovedale (5 miles) is famed for its splendid scenery and riverside walks. Golf and riding are available within 6 miles. Ashbourne (5 miles) offers a good choice of shops restaurants and inns and Bakewell and Buxton are both within a pleasant scenic 30 minute drive. Many historic houses including Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are within easy reach. Alton Towers is about 17 miles away and within easy touring distance is the National Tramway Museum.

Accommodation overview: Situated in the lower part of the tiny hamlet of Thrupp, these two detached properties stand in the grounds of a manor house and lie adjacent to the 18th-century Oxford Canal. Offering wonderfully characterful accommodation for a holiday, they stand opposite one another: The Coach House (Ref NLX) is a spacious and imaginatively converted barn which overlooks open fields, whilst The Dovecote (Ref NLY) is a cosy little romantic hideaway for two.
In its day, the canal was a main artery to British industry, but in modern times, the barges move at a more relaxed pace. Thrupp starred as itself in the TV series Morse in the adaptation of Colin Dextor’s Last Bus to Woodstock. In Thrupp is The Boat public house with its open fire and beamed ceilings. A gentle, short stroll along the Oxford Canal towpath towards the nearby village of Kidlington leads to the Jolly Boatman on the A4260. Both pubs serve a selection of drinks and good food. There are many walks to be enjoyed nearby, either canal-side or through the owner’s managed woodland, along the banks of the River Cherwell, which is abundant with wildlife and birds. A ½-hour walk along the towpath or short drive in the car leads to Kidlington, which, recognised as the ‘largest village in England’, caters for every need - having several supermarkets, post office, chemists, launderette and various pubs and cafés. There is a nearby Park and Ride service into the city of Oxford as well as a regular bus service from the village. The M40 motorway is easily reached, connecting to either London or Birmingham in about 1 hour.
The properties make an ideal holiday base to explore the Cotswolds and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon. The town of Woodstock, home to Blenheim Palace (birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) and the village of Bladon (where Churchill is buried) are within 5 miles. Shops 2 miles, pubs ¼ mile.
