The ruins of Old Castle Lachlan can still be found on the shore of Loch Fyne. It was the Clan home until bombarded from the sea in 1746 by an English warship following the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden. This was retribution against the MacLachlans for joining the unsuccessful rebellion.  Lachlan MacLachlan, the Chief, ADC to Bonnie Prince Charlie, was killed in the battle.  The New Castle started life as a Queen Anne style house at the end of the 18th century.  Then at the end of the 19th century the Scottish baronial transformation was undertaken. It has now been cleverly divided so that the grander southwest facing front is now available for self-catering holidays.  The accommodation is spread over four floors with the kitchen, playroom and shower room on the ground floor.  The first floor has the main living area with drawing room, dining room leading to a billiard room with full sized table; all first-floor rooms have the benefit of a sea view.  The second floor has four bedrooms, all except one have a sea view; the master bedroom has an en-suite and dressing room.  The third attic floor has the remaining three bedrooms, with a single bedroom positioned within the Tower.  The Estate is mainly sheep farming with some woodland.  There are three miles of coastline, nearly all of which is only accessible on foot.  Many different levels of walks are available locally from gentle strolls to more adventurous trails.  The gardens have a tennis court which is available for use by guests.  Seasonal sporting activities are available locally, booking essential.  Clay pigeon shooting and quad bike safaris can also be arranged. The family also owns the Inver Cottage Restaurant which is only a 15 minute walk away providing food throughout the day and evening. A village shop and petrol station can be found in Strachur, only 6 miles away.  Strathlachlan is a great location to explore.
