On the beach at low tide can be seen the remains of a forest drowned after the last Ice Age. Winchelsea, where Millais painted, and which is one of the original Cinque Ports, is 2 miles. The picturesque town of Rye with its cobbled streets, many good restaurants, pubs, art galleries and market is close by. Residing in the heart of 1066 country, Battle and Hastings are within a short drive. Shop and pub 50 yards.

Accommodation overview: This superb period country house is peacefully located along a quiet country lane next to a farm, and stands gracefully within its own lawned gardens. Surrounded by countryside, distant views of St Catherine’s Oratory and the sea can be viewed from the upper level bedrooms, and many scenic walks can be enjoyed in this delightful area. The charming parish of Chale lies at the foot of St Catherine’s Hill, and has a general store, a 14th-century church and a renowned pub/restaurant, about a mile distant, with the sea slightly further. This welcoming detached holiday retreat has been lovingly refurbished, boasting many features such as flagstone floors, window shutters, beams and wood-burning stoves. With families in mind, there is a family room in addition to the main living room, and a spacious dining hall as well as separate dining/breakfast room, which leads to a conservatory. The large lawned garden has a play area for the children. This is an ideal holiday base to explore the area with its fantastic scenic walking and footpaths can also be followed to join the coastal path leading to breathtaking routes across miles of Heritage Coastline. There are secluded sandy bays within 10 minutes drive and sailing, fishing, golf, cycling, swimming and water sports can be found locally. Nearby is Blackgang Chine, the UK’s first theme park which dates back to 1843, and on the west side of the island there is another theme park at The Needles, where the rock formations can be seen. The popular Victorian sandy seaside resort of Ventnor is about 15 minutes’ drive, with its pubs, shops and restaurants and promenade/pier where fresh crab and lobster or catch of the day can be purchased. There is plenty to do on this lovely island, including many NT homes and gardens, such as Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Carisbrooke Castle, Osbourne House, the Pearl Centre and Calbourne Water Mill which has 17th century water and stone mills. A wealth of outdoor activities can be readily accessed – golf riding sailing cycle hire and fishing are all found nearby and windsurfing jet skiing sailplane flying and hang gliding are also available. Visitors to this 'enchanted isle' will find a myriad places of interest to suit all ages and tastes including the Roman Villa at Brading whose carefully preserved mosaics are comparable with any in Europe a wax museum housed in the island's oldest domestic building dating from 1499 Carisbrooke Castle where Charles I was imprisoned in 1647 and Osborne House the home Prince Albert designed for Queen Victoria's pleasure. Further to the west lies Yarmouth a neat little town by a snug harbour much loved by the yachting fraternity and home of the Royal Solent Yacht Club. Also well worth exploring are the pretty villages of Godshill and Brighstone with their delightful little thatched cottages whilst a ring of walnut trees clusters round the village well in Mottistone also home to a beautiful Tudor manor house its gardens in the care of the National Trust and open to the public.
A short drive leads to Cowes host to regattas every summer weekend and the famous Cowes Week at the beginning of August whilst the natural harbour at Bembridge is crammed with yachts and pretty houseboats.
Often called 'The Garden Isle' the island supports a host of superlative vineyards and the 22 acre Botanical Gardens at Ventnor provide an exotic visual feast. Birdwatchers can in season study the numerous species of sea birds to be seen offshore or breeding on the cliffs and Parkhurst Forest is one of the very few locations in Britain still inhabited by the red squirrel. Arts and traditional crafts are seen in numerous studios galleries and craft centres throughout the island. Watching a potter at work or beautiful glassware being hand-blown is an unforgettable holiday experience whilst children of all ages will delight in a trip to the zoo or on the island's steam railway.
