Accommodation overview: The Old Rectory, a detached listed building, and Corner Cottage, an idyllic Cotswolds detached stone property are situated at Worton, a hamlet between the villages of Cassington and Yarnton, both mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Owned by Christchurch College, Oxford until 1774, the Old Rectory and its surroundings are of great historical interest. The holiday properties are at the end of a quiet lane with ample parking at the front and a large private garden to the rear. Nearby are public footpaths across the fields to the neighbouring villages. In Cassington ¾ mile away, two pubs can be found; one of the more traditional type and the other, a free house with a restaurant. Yarnton, 1 mile away, also has two pubs, both with restaurants. Oxford, with its shops and theatres, is only 5 miles away. There is a regular bus service to London from Oxford or a train from nearby Hanborough Station. Ten minutes’ drive away is the historical town of Woodstock. Here lies Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill. Woodstock is also home to the Oxfordshire County Museum. Between Woodstock and Worton, is the village of Bladon where Churchill is buried. For the more active visitor, there are opportunities for walking, riding and sailing within easy reach, but for those who prefer the quiet life, then these properties provide the perfect place to relax. It is also an ideal place from which to explore the Cotswolds or Shakespeare’s Stratford, or somewhere to stay when the various highlights of the English summer calendar are taking place, such as Henley Regatta, Cheltenham Races, the British Grand Prix and Blenheim Horse Trials. Pickering hosts many festivals throughout the year, including the renowned Steam Traction Rally, and fascinating war weekend in October, when the streets are packed with visitors from far and wide dressed in their 1940’s outfits. At this time, the streets and the railway station are transported back to days gone by, a fabulous weekend for all ages. There’s a weekly market, and Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo is just 10 miles. With easy access to the Heritage Coast of Yorkshire, you can take in Whitby, known for its connections with James Cook and Bram Stoker, 18 miles, continuing along the road to Robin Hood’s Bay, a former smuggler’s cove, then Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, all boasting miles of sandy beaches, donkey rides, fun palaces and fairs. A more sophisticated day can be enjoyed at the walled city of York with excellent shopping. Take in the street entertainers and maybe a boat trip along the river. There is little traffic beyond the occasional tractor or car. Small children will enjoy the chickens, horses and sheep in the neighbouring fields on walks short enough for little legs and can enjoy cycling or a visit to the village well. There are great longer walks which dogs love leading from the village to Worton Wood, and footpaths to Great Tew, Sandford and beyond. If you are a keen cyclist Ledwell is an ideal base for exploring the Cotswolds. Great Tew, with the famous Falkland Arms pub, is only 2 miles away and for those keen on real ale you can take a tour round the Hook Norton brewery, a Victorian brewery using one of the last commercially operated steam engines. There are excellent farmers’ markets every Saturday in villages within 15 minutes of the cottage and a wide range of restaurants, and cafes in the nearest town Chipping Norton, which also has a lido and indoor swimming pool. The designer outlet centre of Bicester Village is only 20 minutes away and other attractions within a 30 minute car drive include Blenheim Palace, traditional Cotwold villages Stow-on-the Wold and Burford, and Oxford. Stratford-upon- Avon is also within easy reach. Shop and pub 1½ miles.
