There is a wealth of diverse attractions and activities within the surrounding area. Visit historic Battle, where one may pause for a cream tea and visit the ancient abbey or the fascinating world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of everyday items from days gone by. Hastings is a short drive away offering freshly caught fish from the beaches in the old town, the smugglers cave and many more tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled streets, variety of shops and inns such as the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in history as the meeting place for the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with many other beaches and cliff top walks to be discovered along the entire coast. The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.
Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes celebrations in East Sussex are a local tradition, with each area boasting its own Bonfire Society. Within 1½ miles there are two pubs, the ‘Ash Tree Inn’ at Brownbread Street and ‘The Swan Inn’ at Dallington each serve real ales and fine food. Whether it’s a romantic short break or a family holiday that is required, Thornden Cottages offer the perfect setting, as many people testify by returning again, and again, and again. Pevensey Levels are an ornithologist’s and walker’s delight. Pevensey is one of the south’s leading locations for windsurfing and water sports. The picturesque market town of Battle makes for an enjoyable day out, as well as Hastings, the Sealife Centre and Pevensey Castle (where the Romans invaded). The area is also well known for its local vineyards including Chapel Down and Seddlescombe. A trip to Tenterden - often referred to as the Jewel of the Weald - is an alternative and, for garden lovers, Sissinghurst (NT) is not to be missed. Further National Trust places to visit include Smallhythe Place, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle. Day trips to France are possible with the Channel Tunnel a mere 30-minute drive.
