Accommodation overview: Pieces of 8 is a charming mid terraced cottage set in the pretty little village of Palnackie in the heart of Galloway. The accommodation is spread over three floors and is immaculately presented throughout with a cosy open fire in the lounge making this cottage a suitable choice regardless of the season. The name of the cottage is apposite as this area was notorious for its smuggling connections. Never more so than at nearby Balcary where the hotel was riddled with holes for secreting the contraband. Walter Scott wrote of the area that Few people take more enthusiastically to the 'free-trade' than the men of the Solway Coast Take assurance that your Welcome Pack will be quite legal! The property has electric storage heaters.

Accommodation overview: The large farmhouse is reached by a 1/4 mile private drive, adjoining the owner's house. One of the major benefits of living at Auchenfranco is its location; we feel very privileged to be there and hope you will feel the same when you come to stay. Although the farmhouse could probably accommodate twice the number of visitors, we have deliberately set the maximum occupation at 4 adults in order to preserve the atmosphere of unhurried tranquillity, with space to relax and chill, away from the stresses of everyday life. The farmhouse benefits from a country style kitchen/diner, 2 lounges all with views across paddocks with woodland/reedbeds and hills beyond. Off the main lounge is the conservatory and patio area which gets the afternoon/ evening sun, perfect for afternoon tea or a glass of wine whilst barbecuing. A short walk across a field takes you through our private woodland/reedbed (around 10 acres) down to Lochrutton Loch. The habitat supports a wide range of species of birds & animals, buzzards, woodpeckers, swallows, waterfowl, deer, badgers, bats to name a few, you never know what you might spot! There is course fishing on the Loch, free of charge to guests - just bring your rods. Auchenfranco is 6 miles west of Dumfries, ideally located for the world class 7Stanes mountain bike trails of Mabie, Dalbeattie and Ae forests, close to WWT Caerlaverock wetland centre and RSPB Mersehead nature reserve on the Solway Firth

Accommodation overview: Leave your cares at home for a wee while and stay at Davaar Cottage where you will soon begin to relax and unwind. Sit by the flickering fire with that good book you've been promising to read or leave the car and explore this stunningly beautiful land. Davaar Cottage is idyllically placed within the Glenkens; the wildest and largest glen in Galloway, which is relatively unspoiled with a wide variety of wildlife and spectacular landscape ranging from the mountains and moor land, woodland and forest; burns, rivers, to farmland and lochs. The friendly village of Corsock is just over 3 miles away and has a pub and a thriving village hall which regularly hosts arts functions as well as the Farmer's Market. The vibrant and popular food town of Castle Douglas is well worth a visit. Less than an hour's easy driving will take you to the Colvend coast with its sandy beaches and stunning views of the Cumbrian Fells; the attractive and fascinating Drumlanrig Castle the ancient Douglas stronghold and Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry and the charming little fishing town of Kirkcudbright known as 'the artists' town. The country is a mountain biker's paradise with a choice of the world renowned 7 stanes venues. 'Stane' is the Scots word for stone, and at each of the 7 stanes locations, you'll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend. The walking here is second to none from the seriously challenging and remote Galloway Hills to the less challenging but equally enjoyable and varied coastal walks. The area has remained virtually unchanged for generations, the climate is relatively mild thanks to the balmy touch of the Gulf Stream and you will always be assured of a warm Scottish welcome. Accommodation overview: This beautifully appointed single storey cottage with its delightful sea and countryside views is over 100 years old and has lovely feature stone walls reflecting its history. As its name suggests, Gardeners Cottage was the former residence of the gardener of Ardmillan Castle located just over a couple of miles from Girvan in Ayrhsire. 400 years ago the castle was described thus, The Castle of Ardmillan looked like a palace with its deep cut ditch, its large courtyard, its capacities for siege-standing, its early pears and apples. Originally a fishing port, Girvan is now a small seaside resort and during the summer it is possible to sail around local landmarks on the lovely paddle steamer, the Waverley. This is an area renowned for stunning sunsets, for tremendous views of Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran, and the Mull of Kintyre - and on a clear day, Northern Ireland. It is also renowned for its amazing walks, exhilarating world-class mountain biking trails, fishing, or for just forgetting ones troubles for a while and savouring every special moment in this superb region of Southern Scotland. Whilst there are strolls aplenty, serious walkers will enjoy the challenge of the Ayrshire Coastal Path, which runs for 100 miles from Glenapp to Skelmorlie, along one of the finest coastlines in the British Isles. Visitor attractions along the way include Robert Burns birthplace Museum at Alloway, Dundonald Castle near Troon and Kilwinning Abbey. Golfers are also well catered for as Ayrshire is home to some of the finest golf courses in Scotland, including Royal Troon and Turnberry. A memorable day out is to the stunning Culzean Castle just 5 miles north of Girvan, which includes a small museum dedicated to the memory of the famous American President and wartime General Dwight D Eisenhower, who was gifted an apartment in the castle. The castle itself occupies a dramatic cliff-top location with superb views across the sea to the mountains of Arran. Inland is the magnificent Galloway Forest Park, the largest in the UK. Glentrool has been described as a Highlands in miniature and intoxicates the visitor with its wild beauty and intriguing history. The Bruces Stone commemorates Robert the Bruces first victory over the English and commands a fine view of Loch Trool and the Galloway Hills, and is the traditional starting-point for the gruelling jaunt up Merrick, at 2764 feet the highest mountain in southern Scotland. This area has some of the oldest oak trees in Scotland and a wide variety of wildlife including red squirrels, hares, roe deer, badgers, otters and herons. The lucky few may catch a glimpse of barn owls, hen harriers and buzzards. Property is all on ground floor has under floor heating.
