Enjoy the many inland and coastal footpaths including the South West Coastal Path. Abbotsbury village is a real chocolate box village with thatched and stone cottages, village store, butchers, tea rooms and pubs. It is also famous for its sub-tropical gardens, children’s farm and the world’s only swannery. To the east along the coast is the Georgian seaside town of Weymouth, with its Blue Flag beach, Sea Life Centre, a day trip to France or the Channel Islands and even a sea fishing trip can be enjoyed, all leaving from the harbour. The medieval town of Blandford Forum is only 2 miles away and boasts one of the most complete Georgian townscapes in England, with the town hall, and Church of St Peter and St Paul being the main attractions. Higher Brockhampton is just a little further from the town centre and is worth a visit to see the cottage where the novelist Thomas Hardy lived. Max Gate - the writer’s last abode and where he lived for the longest period of time - is also open to the public. Just past the quaintly named village of Puddletown is the fine 15th-century Athelhampton House, with its gardens adorned by elegant fountains and unusual topiary features. Within a 30-minute drive lies the wonderful Dorset coastline, with the Blue Flag beaches of Bournemouth and Poole, the Purbeck Hills and the pretty villages of Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove. Revelling in a mild climate, Bournemouth is renowned for its clean sandy beach and boasts several public gardens, the best known of which is Compton Acres, comprising seven different international garden themes. The Jurassic and Heritage coastline takes in the port of Weymouth and the lovely village of Abbotsbury with its famous Swannery which is the only place in the world where over 600 swans can be visited during the nesting and hatching time (end May - end June). Accommodation overview: In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, these four converted listed barns are set in an L shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. They offer an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. All four are renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, are tastefully furnished, and have use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. They can be booked individually or together so are ideal for family get togethers. Set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), there is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby, horse riding, and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far.
