Accommodation overview: Skerray Mains is a truly delightful traditional Highland farmhouse. Originally built around 1820 as the main farmhouse for the surrounding crofts, it has been painstakingly restored and refurbished and now provides an exceptionally high standard of accommodation whilst retaining its delightful original features. Whitewashed stone walls, solid wood floors, exposed wood doors, deep silled windows adorned with high quality soft furnishings and furniture combine to create an air of country warmth and richness. The gardens are a real delight. Hewn out of the surrounding hillside is an oasis of lawns, shrubs and flowers, with even a garden pond to complete the picture. The old wash house in the grounds, although no longer in use, is a listed building. With its thick stone walls it offers an insight into a bygone era and adds to the ambience of this charming country retreat. The cottage is located in one of the most scenic areas of the North West Highlands. Surrounded by open farmland and hills the quiet lane leads down to a perfect small harbour. Here small fishing boats and the occasional pleasure craft are launched from the jetty, and fishing off the rocks is a local pastime. Sea fishing is also available from Skerray harbour and boat trips available on request. The owner has provided two kayaks and also mountain bikes for visitors use which are kept in the garden shed. Just a short drive away is the beautiful and secluded Lamigo Bay. The nearby beach at Coldbackie boasts an amazing white sandy beach leading into the turquoise sea of the Atlantic. The area is a paradise for surfers, body boarders and beach lovers generally. The pretty village of Bettyhill, above Torrisdale bay, has good local facilities including pubs, restaurants, as well as an excellent indoor swimming pool and leisure centre. There is also a museum documenting the fascinating history of the Highland clearances and by following the 'Strathnaver Trail' visitors can experience life in the Highlands from Neolithic times through the Viking era to the modern day. The area is a wild-life watcher's paradise. Whales, basking sharks, porpoises, seals and otters are all seen in the area. At Melvich just along the coast there is also a colony of puffins which can be seen and at Forsinard, Strath Halladale, there is an RSPB nature reserve, where local rangers will take visitors to explore the bird life, flora and fauna close to hand. Nearby Borgie forest has a number of superb woodland trails, ideal for walking and cycling. Golf, canoeing, cycling, hill walking, climbing and horse riding are all available locally. The local riding school offers superb hacking across the sands - a wonderful experience for horse lovers. There are a number of excellent local restaurants, pubs and cafes in the small towns and villages along the coast. Skerray Mains is a really lovely cottage from which to experience this stunning part of the British Isles. Property has oil central heating.
