On the beach at low tide can be seen the remains of a forest drowned after the last Ice Age. Winchelsea, where Millais painted, and which is one of the original Cinque Ports, is 2 miles. The picturesque town of Rye with its cobbled streets, many good restaurants, pubs, art galleries and market is close by.
