In the Galloway Forest Park guided ranger walks offer opportunities for a close encounter with Red deer – wild goats also roam here and the RSPB reserve at Wood of Cree is only 4 miles away. On the Machars peninsula which stretches 20 miles south of Newton Stewart visitors can explore picturesque harbours at Garlieston and Isle of Whithorn as well as sampling the local catch at a seafood restaurant. Known as Scotland's Book Town Wigtown (7 miles) boasts about 18 bookshops arts crafts and coffee shops and a famous book festival in September. Shop and pub 1 mile.
