Accommodation overview: A totally unique property built in 1790 Fort Norris was once the gatehouse to nearby Norris Castle. Both were alleged to be the playground of a young Princess Victoria her love of the area purportedly led to Prince Albert commissioning Osborne House which is just a few minutes away. From the impressive round entrance hall with its suit of armour Fort Norris is steeped in history and even the 17th century wooden panelling in the sitting room tells its own tale. From two observation platforms accessed by climbing the spiral staircase into its turrets there are stunning views of the sea with passing cruise liners and on occasion the Red Arrows. In addition to its unique accommodation outside lies an acre of grounds featuring a beautiful private walled garden and a summer house. Fort Norris is located in East Cowes an area that like its counterpart at Cowes boasts a major yachting facility. Less than two miles away is the famous St Mildred’s Church favoured by Queen Victoria whilst on the island and well worth a visit. The whole island with its many attractions for all interests is easily accessible. East Cowes is served by the Red Funnel ferry service from Southampton and Fishbourne (from Portsmouth) is only six miles away. Day trips to the mainland can be taken as a foot-passenger on the hovercraft from Ryde for Gunwharf Quays and the historic dockyard at Portsmouth. Shop pub and restaurant 1 mile.
